    WP3: Macro-level analysis

WP3 aims to measure the aggregate, country-level effects of technological transformations, globalisation and demographic changes across the EU, including by measuring their effect on gaps in labour market outcomes between younger and older people; on wage and income inequality; on supply of and demand for skills; and on reshoring and trade flows.

Age-specific effects are important in part because older workers usually exhibit lower technology-related skills, but have more experience and are more likely to be unionised and have safety nets. It is also vital to identify recent trends in skills supplied by foreign workers. Other tasks include measuring skill demand within occupations and changes in occupational structures, as well as the extent to which technological progress affects exports and multinationals’ location choices. We will produce six research papers under this WP, on:

    • the effects of technology and globalisation on the intergenerational gaps in labour market outcomes

    • the effects of population ageing on capital accumulation and productivity

    • the evolution of skill supply and demand

    • technology, connectivity and evolving trade patterns

    • drivers of inequality in Europe

    • the challenges and opportunities from automation, labour supply and skills for the future of global value chains
